Christos Varvantakis is a guest researcher at ZOiS from September 2021 to February 2022. During his stay, he will work on a new research project on activism together with Piotr Goldstein as well as being involved in various other existing projects. Varvantakis is currently co-investigator of the ERC-funded Children’s Photography Archive. He has a background in sociology and social anthropology and received his PhD from the Freie Universität Berlin. Over the last fifteen years he has undertaken research in Greece, Germany and India, funded by, among others, the ERC, DFG, Erasmus+, FP7 Marie Curie Auctions, and DAAD. His research focuses on the intersections of childhood, politics, urban cultures, and archives, as well as on qualitative, visual and multimodal research methodologies. His books include Political Activism across the Life Course (Routledge, ed. with Nolas and Aruldoss) and Global Youth in Digital Trajectories (Routledge, ed. with Kontopodis and Wulf). He is also co-editor of the journal entanglements: experiments in multimodal ethnography and he serves on the editorial board of various international scientific journals (e.g. Qualitative Research; Journal of Ethnographic Films).
