Introductory workshop

MAPA: Digital Atlas of Ukraine is a program undertaken by the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute and its partners. It brings the latest innovations of information technology to studies of modern Ukrainian history and contemporary political geography. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can help to illustrate and explain economic, historical, political, and social transformations within Ukraine using spatial and temporal analysis. MAPA is a state of the art web-resource for researchers of Ukraine, envisioned as a tool that helps to overcome stereotypical macro-regional divisions. It is an open tool available for anybody interested in the study of Ukraine: journalists, students, researchers and think tankers.

At ZOiS, Kostyantyn Bondarenko and Viktoriya Sereda will present MAPA. In an introductory workshop, potential users get the chance to directly use the web resource, get instructions and discuss possible applications.

Viktoriya Sereda is currently a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin (Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin). Her research focuses on urban sociology, memory studies, nationalism and identity studies. Since 2015, she is an associate professor of sociology at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv.

Kostyantyn Bondarenko is IT Professional at the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University and Project Manager for the MAPA: Digital Atlas of Ukraine program. As the Project Manager, Kostyantyn manages all technical and organizational aspects of the MAPA.

The event will be held in English and is followed by a light lunch. Please register at events(at)zois-berlin(dot)de until 9 May.
